Bordered by stunning beaches, and dotted with picturesque towns, this verdant island has long been a major source of nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa. Its capital city is St. George’s, which is widely held to be the loveliest city in the Caribbean. Its horseshoe shaped harbour is surrounded by a pastel rainbow of dockside warehouses and the red tiled roofs of traditional shops and homes. Grenada is very mountainous with Mount St. Catherine being the highest at 840 m (2,760 ft). Several small rivers with beautiful waterfalls flow into the sea from these mountains.
The climate is tropical, it is hot and humid in the rainy season and cooled by the trade winds in the dry season. Grenada, being on the southern edge of the hurricane belt, has suffered only three hurricanes in fifty years.
Grenada, with its unspoiled landscapes, has the perfect balance, appealing to the interest of adventure seekers, beach dwellers or couples looking for that romantic Caribbean getaway. Carriacou and Petite Martinique boast the most beautiful coral reefs. The two islands are part of the Grenadines, a chain of coral and volcanic islands between Grenada and St. Vincent. Carriacou, the larger of the two, is known as the ‘Land of Reefs’, with shallow clear waters, great for snorkeling. Islanders of both these islands are independent and fiercely traditional.
