St Kitts and Nevis Holidays
St Kitts and Nevis is a federal 2 island country in the Eastern Caribbean. It is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, in both area and residents. The smaller island of Nevis lies about 2 miles southeast of St. Kitts, across a channel called “The Narrows.” To the north-northwest are the islands of St Barths, Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten and Anguilla. To the east and northeast are Antigua and Barbuda. The capital city is Basseterre on the larger island of Saint Kitts. The highest peak, at 1,156 metres, is Mount Liamuiga on St. Kitts. The islands are of volcanic origin, with large central peaks covered in tropical rainforest. Most of the inhabitants on both islands lives close to the sea where the land flattens out. There are numerous rivers running down from the mountains on both islands, which provide fresh water to the locals. St. Kitts also has one small lake
St.Kitts and Nevis has a hot and tropical climate moderated by trade winds during most of the year. The driest period is January to April and the wettest season is May to October. There is increased rainfall in summer and towards the end of the year, although rain showers can occur anytime through the year. The islands suffer from tropical hurricanes which are most likely to happen between August and October.
St Kitts and Nevis are one of the most seductive spots in the Caribbean, with natural beauty, sunny skies, warm waters, and plenty of white sandy beaches. St Kitts is the larger of the 2 islands with plenty to do, from lively Basseterre and Brimstone Hill Fortress to the party strip and resorts of Frigate Bay, a bar filled sweep of sand with gentle waves. A visit to Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a must see, an UNESCO World Heritage site worth spending time at. Soar above the St. Kitts rainforest on a state-of-the-art, five line zip-line system. You can even take a scenic railway tour.
Nevis is the smaller and quieter of the 2 islands, the oldest British colony in the Caribbean. A single volcanic mountain, a few beaches and a small capital, Charlestown. Take a nature walk into the verdant upper reaches of the peak. History on Nevis centers round names such as Horatio Nelson and Alexander Hamilton. If you are feeling fit, hike the 9 mile Upper Round Road, past farms, orchards, gardens and rainforest. On the way, try the fresh fruit and spot the monkeys and butterflies. The hike takes about 5 hours or you can walk a shorter segment. Eden Brown Estate on the south east coast has the distinction of being Nevis’s scariest site. The almost perfectly round island of Nevis is less than 36 square miles, with one main road that has been in use since the plantation days, encircling the island.
